Here are my top 5 tips if you’re planning a Yosemite Taft Point elopement!!!
Tip #1
Late summer and early fall is the best time of year to elope at Taft Point. This is simply because the road to Taft and Glacier Point is often closed from winter to late spring/early summer due to snowfall. September is arguably the absolute best month because the crowds drop significantly after Labor Day and there’s a chance of cooler weather.
Spring elopements in Yosemite are stunning with waterfalls at their peak and crowd levels relatively low, but Taft Point is not the best option due to accessibility. I recommend considering these locations for spring instead: El Capitan Meadow, Valley View Yosemite, Sentinel Meadow, Sentinel Bridge, Cook’s Meadow.
Tip #2
Elope at sunrise if possible! Crowds are significantly lower so you’re more likely to have the place to yourself! If mornings aren’t your jam, I definitely recommend you elope on a weeknight at Taft Point. Weekends in Yosemite are often extremely crowded.
The absolutely best option? Sunrise on a weekday!!
Tip #3
Pack your elopement attire and hike out in comfortable clothes!! Though it’s only about a 1 mile hike out to Taft Point from the Glacier Point parking lot, it is a dirt trail and at one point does require you to hop over a fallen tree. Best to save your elopement outfits for the grand finale! It’s super easy to change when you get there. But if changing in the outdoors is not your thing, I recommend bringing a pop-up changing tent. You can also ask your photographer if they have one they can bring!
Tip #4
You need to bring:
Sunscreen: The scenic views of Taft Point have no shade coverage, so I recommend wearing sunscreen and bringing it with you for a second coat as needed!
Bug spray: The hike is amongst the trees and in the evening mosquitos are out and about so you’ll be thankful for that bug spray.
Flashlight: If it’s a sunrise elopement, you’ll need a few to light the trail on the way there, and if its an evening elopement you’ll need it on the way back. The trail is pitch black as soon as the sun goes down!
Lots of water: Though it’s a short hike, the elevation may make you feel a little more dehydrated than usual! Make sure you have plenty with you!
Tip #5
Make sure you check out the permit application process for Yosemite elopements and weddings. You’ll also want to review other rules and regulations regarding Yosemite ceremony locations and group sizes!
